Clay's Tech Tips:
The Prepress Friendly Guide to Importing Graphics Into Pagemaker For High Resolution Output

When importing graphics into Pagemaker, one must first of all make sure it is an actual importable file. Copying and pasting from the clipboard looks great and may work to a laser printer or bubble jet but when attempting to output to an imagesetter, more graphic information is required.

We have found that when assembling a large document into printing spread imposition, any improperly imported items do impose onto the page but are omitted when final output occurs. With the luxury of a print preview on the image setter, the loss of useless film is avoided but the loss of time still exists.

A few simple rules apply when creating files for output.

As I have mentioned above, you need importable files. If you are working in any photo editing software, after the image is at the state when you would like to place it into Pagemaker, you create and importable file. Most programs allow you to save as, the file formats that work best are EPS and Tiff files.  JPEG formats work but are risky. When dealing with color files, they must be save in CMYK format, not RGB. When working in a drawing program, you must export the graphic as a Placeable EPS.

After that is done, you can begin to import them into Pagemaker. To do that you go to Place in the File menu, the next step is to select the file you would like placed. The next box to come up, if the graphic is large, is one asking if you want to imbed the graphic into the document. Select yes if your document is a small amount of pages and no if you are working on a large document, such as a catalogue.

If you say yes, the program will imbed all the file information into the document, creating a rather large one.

When you say No, the graphics header is placed but the links to the graphics are required, thus when preparing to send the file to our office, you will need to copy all EPSs created for the document.

The later is best for numerous page documents requiring page imposition. You will also find that it easier to copy to disks this way. Instead of one large Pagemaker file, you will have a small to medium size file and, depending how many items you have placed, several small to medium imported files.

If you have any questions on this topic, please do not hesitate to call me. I will be pleased to help you through any troubles.
